From the Meeting of the President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Karolos Papoulias with the President of the European Jewish Congress Mr. Moshe Kantor and the President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece Mr. Moses Constantinis at the Presi

Presidential Mansion, 4 February 2008

PRESIDENT: I am pleased to welcome you. Because I also have a sentimental reason: My origins are from Ioannina where we had a flourishing Jewish Community. Unfortunately we lost it all in Auschwitz. You realize that I spent my childhood with friends and classmates from the Jewish Community and this cannot be forgotten.

This is why I strongly support and wish for the Peace process in the Middle East to come to a happy end. Yet, braveness and a big compromise, a historic compromise are needed so that the State of Israel exists within safe borders together with a Palestinian state which I think has a great deal to benefit by its cooperation with the State of Israel.

And I say this because for many years, as Foreign Minister, I worked to this direction. It was not easy at the time and it is not easy today.

Again, I am pleased to welcome you and I wish you all the best.
