Presidential Mansion, 4 February 2008
PRESIDENT: I am pleased to welcome you. Because I also have a sentimental reason: My origins are from Ioannina where we had a flourishing Jewish Community. Unfortunately we lost it all in Auschwitz. You realize that I spent my childhood with friends and classmates from the Jewish Community and this cannot be forgotten.
This is why I strongly support and wish for the Peace process in the Middle East to come to a happy end. Yet, braveness and a big compromise, a historic compromise are needed so that the State of Israel exists within safe borders together with a Palestinian state which I think has a great deal to benefit by its cooperation with the State of Israel.
And I say this because for many years, as Foreign Minister, I worked to this direction. It was not easy at the time and it is not easy today.
Again, I am pleased to welcome you and I wish you all the best.
